Giant Rosamond development takes another step
Expanding region's largest community
BY BILL DEAVER
ROSAMOND - A development that would include 1,200 residential unit homes, an 18-hole golf course, and a three-acre commercial center took another step closer to construction this week.
Kern County supervisors set a hearing for June 3 at 2 p.m. to consider a development agreement on the project to be located between 110th and 120th Streets West on the south side of Gaskell Road.
Lorelei Oviatt of the Kern County Planning Department said developers of the Copa de Oro development have offered to pay a $1,500-per home development fee to the county. The fee will cover future impacts to libraries and fire and police protection resulting from adding the homes and residents to the area. Project developers will also be required to pay developer fees to the Southern Kern Unified School District and the Rosamond-Willow Springs Transportation Impact fund.
The project was approved by supervisors in 2000, Oviatt said.
Expansion plans
Randy Abbott of Bakersfield, who represents the project's developer, said Monday that the project was originally planned for 933 units and has been expanded to 1,200. He said a separate development agreement will be required for the additional units.
Abbott said the approval process is still in its early stages. "Another 300 acres has been added to the project," he said, adding that, "They're going through a major revision of the project to increase the number of units somewhat," adding that the overall density of project is the same as originally approved and somewhat less.
If built, the project would reinforce the Rosamond-Willow Springs area's position as Southeast Kern's most populous community. Current population is about 15,000.
Abbott said construction on the new community could begin within eight
to 10 months.
