New Rosamond sheriff's station may be delayed
Fire station plans on schedule
BY BILL DEAVER
ROSAMOND - Construction of a new sheriff's station in Rosamond could be
delayed
because of increasing costs and a decreasing county budget, Supervisor
Don Maben told
the Rosamond Town Council last week.
The county plans to build a new fire station and sheriff's station near
the library and the
Rosamond Community Services District headquarters that's under construction.
"The fire station will be built," Maben assured those attending the meeting.
The ancient fire
station, which consists of a Quonset hut and a group of other structures
disguised by a
"Potemkin Village" facade, needs to be replaced. The sheriff's department's
quarters,
located away from the community's center on Sierra Highway south of town,
are in better
condition, Maben noted.
Delaying construction of the sheriff's station stems from cost overruns
on a building in
Ridgecrest, Maben said.
"The cost of construction is really going up - contractor aren't 'hungry'
these days," he
added.
RTC board member Dick Pengilley, a building contractor, said part of the
problem could be
strict requirements in bidding government projects.
Maben said he hopes the problem with the sheriff's station can be worked
out and both
structures built at once. When the buildings and RCSD's new facility is
completed, the
structures will form a new civic center for the community.
